EDM and its CEO receive International Awards

EDM elected The Power Utility of the year

The state-owned electricity supply company Electricidade de Moçambique, E.P. (EDM) was elected the Power Utility of the Year and its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mateus Magala, the Outstanding Contribution Award in Power. The prizes were awarded on 16th May 2018, in the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC), in Cape Town City, South Africa, during the African Utility Week Conference, in the areas of electricity and water supply, an event organised by Spintelligent, in coordination with Clarion Events, both South African companies.

 The elections comply with the indicators and criteria set for the selection of the best entities, which include Leadership, Vision, Reforms, Innovation, Performance and Success during the year 2017/18. The panel of the jury comprised international specialists, renowned professionals and personalities in the Energy Sector and the entire process, as well as the results were audited by an independent international firm.

EDM and its Chief Executive Officer received the awards in recognition of their vision, leadership and results in the on-going transformations in the company in order to achieve the Universal Access to Energy in the Country by 2030, in a contest which had the following countries as finalists: Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Tanzania and South Africa and also personalities such as: Ana Hajduka, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Green Co, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; Chris Prengels, Chief Executive Officer of Tiger Power, Bégica/Tanzaia; Herta von Stiegel, Chief Executive Officer of Ariya Capital, from Kenya; Jean Bosco Mugiraneza, Chief Executive Officer of Rwanda Energy Group Limited, from Rwanda and Mouhamadou Makhtar Cisse, Chief Executive Officer of Societé Nationale d´electricité du Sénégal, from Senegal.

These distinctions follow others obtained in year 2017, when EDM received, for the second consecutive time (the first time was in 2016), the award of the Largest Companies in Mozambique with the Most Variation of Revenues in the Service Sector and the Second Largest Company in the Ranking of the 100 Largest Companies of Mozambique (an increase of three positions from 5th to the 2nd place in relation to the previous edition of 2016). The Ranking of the 100 Largest Companies is organised by the prestigious company called KPMG.

Additionally, in 2017, Clube “Pássaro Azul” (Blue Bird Club), a civil society organisation, adjudged EDM as the Company of the Year, for having been outstanding amongst the national companies, for the major efforts made in rural electrification, as well as the social service provided during the year, and EDM’s Chief Executive Officer was considered the Economic Personality of the Year in 2017, in recognition of his leadership and business management, the prerequisites that enhanced a lot the positive performance of the Company. Also in 2017, the Chief Executive Officer of EDM received the African Leadership Business Excellence Award in Washington by the African Leadership Magazine and the Senate of the United States in recognition of his transformative leadership in the sector.

These awards are the product of efforts, hard work, dedication, sacrifice and intelligence of all EDM staff and above all mean that the work that has been done internally is seen and assessed not only in Mozambique but also in other parts of the world and are an indication of the certainty of the path that we are following.
